If you are new to York College, someone will tell you about Murph’s within your first month. Probably sooner. It is the kind of place that gets passed down from one class to the next, the way a good study spot or a decent cheap breakfast does.

Here is what you need to know.

It is close

Murph’s sits on Jessop Place, just off Jackson Street, a short walk from campus. Close enough that you do not need a plan or a designated driver to get here, which is part of why it has been a student favorite for so long.

It has a little of everything

Some nights you want a quiet drink and a seat at the bar. Some nights you want a room full of people and a dance floor. Murph’s does both. The Back Bar has one of the bigger dance floors in York, so when the night calls for it, there is somewhere to go without leaving.

During the week we run events. Trivia, music bingo, karaoke, the kind of nights that give you a reason to show up on a Tuesday instead of staying in. Check the events page for the current schedule, because it changes with the season.

It is not new, and that is the point

Murph’s has been here since 1975. Two generations of the same family have run it. Parents who went to York College bring their own kids in now. That history is not something we advertise so much as something you feel when you walk in. The place has been broken in by fifty years of good nights.

For parents and visitors

If you are in town visiting a student and want to see where they actually spend their time, this is a safe bet. It is a real neighborhood bar, friendly, and easy to find. Come have a drink and meet the staff. You will understand the appeal by the second round.
