A Regular’s Guide to Happy Hour at Murph’s
Everybody has a spot. The one where you do not have to explain yourself, the bartender already knows what you want, and the first drink after a long day tastes a little better than it has any right to. For a lot of people in York, that spot is Murph’s.
We have been on Jessop Place since 1975. Happy hour here is not a gimmick. It is just the part of the evening when the room fills up, the regulars trade seats, and somebody usually talks somebody else into staying for one more.
When to come
Happy hour runs in the early part of the evening, before the room gets busy. Come straight from work or class and you will have your pick of seats at the bar. Come a little later and you will walk into a room that is already going. Both are good. They are just different nights.
If you want the exact times, check the hours on our home page or give us a call at (717) 848-4030. We would rather you got the right time from us than an old listing on some other website.
What to order
The drinks are honest and the prices are fair. That has always been the point. We are not trying to sell you a cocktail with a story. We are trying to pour you something good and get it in front of you before you finish the last one.
If you have never been in, ask whoever is behind the bar what people are drinking that night. You will get a straight answer.
The grilled cheese
Ask anyone who went to York College in the last few decades about Murph’s and there is a decent chance the grilled cheese comes up before the beer does. It is simple, it is cheap, and at the right hour of the night it is close to perfect. That is all we will say about it. Come find out.
Why people keep coming back
York has plenty of places to get a drink. What we have that you cannot build overnight is fifty years of people walking through the same door. Students, regulars, folks who moved away and come back at the holidays just to check that we are still here. We are.
Stop in for happy hour this week. Sit at the bar. Say hello. That is how most of the friendships in this place started.
